Jazz is a music which exists owing to the fact that groups were able to perform over longer periods of time in the same location and thereby develop and refine their playing technique.
From Summer 2002 until Autumn 2004 the Hausquartett enjoyed the right to hospitality at the 'Theater am Brennpunkt' in Baden where it was essentially concerned with the development of a performance form built not only on free-play but also on a material pool of selected standards. The usual free-play cliches and the somewhat insipid mainstream theme-solo-theme sequence has be broken away from. The possibility to play every Thursday triggered an interesting musical development.
The quartet wrote on the theme of live music: "We ascertain the material to be utilised during short rehearsals. This is then used as the basis for free improvisation during the concerts and makes it possible for up to three standard themes to be simultaneously in play at any one time. The already complicated situation of the free-play is then expanded using concrete material."
The music of Christoph Merki (altosax), Christoph Baumann (piano), Hämi Hämmerli (bass), Tony Renold (drums) is characterised by the free association of traditional material (standards). The interplay and nuances of all kinds play a crucial role. An intro or a transition is, most of the time, more important than the piece itself.
