Biography

Rolf Liebermann, *14. 09. 1910, †02. 01. 1999. Composer and intendant. Director of various radio stations and the opera houses of Hamburg and Paris. Composed operas, works for orchestra and chansons.

Rolf Liebermann initially studied law and then music under the tutelage of Hermann Scherchen, who led him as his assistant to Budapest, Prague and Vienna.
Following completion of his studies, he released his first chanson compositions and co-worked on various cabarets.
After 1938 – Studies composition by Wladimir Vogel in Switzerland
1945 until 1957 – Active in the orchestra department of the German-Swiss national radio station Radio Beromünster, initially as Hermann Scherchen's sound engineer and then as the director of the radio orchestra; Produces a myriad of compositions ranging from political songs through to opera, from piano sonatas to music for machines, from concerts to multi-media projects
1957 until 1959 – Director of NDR Hamburg's music department
1959 until 1973 – Intendant at the Hamburg State Opera, which, through numerous commissions and world premieres, leads him into the eye of an international public
1974 until 1980 – Director of the Paris Opera House, continues his political theme begun in Hamburg and opens up opera to a broader social stratum with the help of film and television media
1983 – Despite his dedication to numerous international assosiations and a very busy guest lectureship diary, he takes on the position of Director of the International Summer Academy at the "Mozarteum" in Salzburg
1985 until 1988 – Renewed position as intendant at the Hamburg State Opera
Liebermann died in Paris.
