Biography
Ernst Haefliger is one of the most legendary oratorio and lieder singers of this century. His interpretation of the Evangelists in Bach's Passions, particularly in the memorable performance with the Münchner Bachelors under the direction of Karl Richter, is considered incomparable. As an opera singer he was engaged as principal lyrical Tenor with the German Opera in Berlin from 1952 until 1972. He interpreted all of Mozart's Tenor parts and performed as Hans in Smetana's 'Verkaufte Brot' - he remains unforgettable as Pfitzner's 'Palestrina'. Haefliger, under the direction of Ferenc Fricsay, recorded numerous Mozart operas and Beethoven's 'Fidelio' for Deutsche Gramophon, he also recorded 'Das Lied von der Erde' under the direction of Bruno Walter Mahler for Columbia Records. His lieder recordings for Deutsche Gramaphon and Claves Records are exemplary of his time. Like Suzanne Danco and Jussi Björling, Ernst Haefliger trained under the Italian Tenor Fernando Carpi. Haefliger continues to impart his bel canto technique at numerous master classes in Zurich, Japan and America. His book 'Die Singstimme' published by Schott-Verlag in Mainz, is about to be released in a revised fifth edition.
