Biografia
Matthias Ziegler is one of the most versatile and innovative flutists of his generation. His list of engagements belongs as much to the traditional flute repertoire and contemporary music as to cross-border musical concepts between classical and jazz. Appropriately his concerting activities are equally multifaceted with solo performances on his self-developed instruments, concerts with the percussionist Pierre Favre, appearances with George Gruntz, tours with the American bassist Mark Dresser and collaboration with the 'Collegium Novum Zürich'.
Concert tours have led him to North America, Japan, Australia, South America, and Israel. Numerous CD recordings in the fields of jazz and classical music document the diversity of his musical interests.
Matthias Ziegler is a tutor for the transverse flute and improvisation at the 'Musikhochschule Winterthur Zürich' and artistic director of 'Palladio Musik & Raum', a project series whereby architecurally interesting sites are sought out and used as the backdrop for performances.
In the search for new sounds Ziegler has vastly expanded the expressive potential of the conventional flute and the electro-acoustically amplified contrabass flute. Inspired by the novel sound world of these instruments composers such as the Swiss Michael Jarrell, George Gruntz and Mathias Rüegg, the Tadjik Benjamin Yusupov and the American Mark Dresser have written flute concerts for Matthias Ziegler
Matthias Ziegler plays a quarter tone flute with the 'Brannen-Kingma System', an alto flute and a bass flute from Eva Kingma (Holland), a contrabass flute from Kotato & Fukushima (Japan) and his self-developed Matusi Flute.
