It has been around four years now since these three musicians set out on a common journey, what began as a daily menu soon turned into an à la carte dish. Potage du jour - an improvisations trio with the vocalist and sound artist Franziska Baumann, the saxophonist Jürg Solothurnmann and the pianist and composer Christoph Baumann - was such an interesting affair from the beginning that it has remained so since 2000.
All three members are involved in other projects or with various other ensembles as either composers, sound artists, live-electronic performers or concept orientated improvisers. Potage du Jour has designed a modus which relates primarily to interactive processes in order to identify, register and develop forms which surface during improvisation. Play is determined by clairaudient reactions, dynamics and a broad palette of sound effects. The sensitivity of the here tone on tone, tone beside tone, tone with tone and tone against tone surprises even the performers themselves and provides the impulse again and again to further expand the present interaction.
The breath of the musicians flows - even acoustically - into the network of tones: sound actions, singings, rhythmical pulsations, sound cascades, spatial abeyences, melodic motives and noise sidelines result in a refined and colourful play.
Franziska Baumann oscillates between action and song, a voice fundamentally related to the body and pervaded by wild games and deep serenity becomes song.
Jürg Solothurnmann absorbs and transforms a multifaceted style whose spectrum ranges from ‘folklore imaginaire’ through jazz to speech-like and pointillist sound figures. The varying aesthetics of song within diverse cultures from around the world inspire him as much as does the most modern classic.
Christoph Baumann is firmly anchored in contemporary jazz but has a profound understanding of such styles as salsa and new music. He has prolific experience with dramatic music for theatre and dance. His piano playing consists of harmonious and percussively rhythmical accents.
