Elisabeth Spöndlin grew up in Zurich. She trained as a social worker and now has lived in Solothurn until her death where she devotes herself exclusively to music.
Although she began to play with the violin at the age of nine, it was not until she became a forty-year-old woman that she turned to music. Reluctantly and secretly she began to submit to her inner desire to express herself musically. In 1981 she and her works were presented on the radio broadcast 'Musikmacher ohne Oeffentlichkeit' where she discussed her works with Thüring Bräm. He encouraged her time and again in her work. 1989 saw the founding of the 'Friends of the Composer Elisabeth Spöndlin' circle. In 1997 she received the culture prize from the canton of Solothurn.
