Petra Ackermann studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna under Siegfried Führlinger and at the Royal Academy of Music in London under John White and Jan Schlapp (Baroque viola). Her artistic development was influenced by the collaboration with Garth Knox under whom she studied the contemporary viola repertoire in Paris. Petra Ackermann has had numerous works dedicated to her and has also worked together with such important composers as Beat Furrer, Friedrich Cerha, Georg Friedrich Haas, Klaus Lang, Pierluigi Billone, Peter Maxwell-Davies, Pierre Boulez and Jonathan Harvey. She has performed concerts as a soloist at the Wiener Musikverein and the Wiener Konzerthaus, and participates regularly as a guest at such renowned festivals as the Wien Modern, Musikprotokoll Graz, Klangspuren Schwaz, Carinthischer Sommer and Salzburger Festspiele. She is a member of the Trio Eis, the Ensemble PHACE contemporary music, the Koehne Quartett and the Ensemble Wiener Collage; she was also guest musician of the Klangforum Wien and the Ensemble Contrechamps. She has collaborated intensively with David Liebmann, Wayne Horvitz, Elliott Sharp and James Blood Ulmer - musicians from the fields of jazz, electronic music and world music. She received the sponsorship award of Kärnten / Austria in 2009. Petra Ackermann has played the viola in the Mondrian Ensemble since 2009 and lives together with her family in Baden.
